Passot, Frédérique, Jean Szlamowicz, & Elodie Vialleton "Y a-t-il une
intonation propre aux questions en anglais?". (Is there an intonation specific to questions in English?)
Using the same tools as M.-A. Morel's to describe French,
F. Passot, J. Szlamowicz and E. Vialleton propose to investigate the existence of a specific question
intonation in English. Their data come from a corpus of naturally occurring one-to-one conversations between native English-speakers.
Their results show that such an intonational regularity does exist only in a limited number of configurations. More generally, it appears that
one has to take into consideration the interplay of syntactic elaboration, prosodic focalization and pragmatic implications in order
to determine the intersubjective status of interrogatives.
